How do you know if it’s a successful day?

This is not your father’s success.  In today’s business world, and especially in the business of fitness, success is not defined as climbing a corporate ladder and getting a gold watch at the end of your career.

In fact, I’ve heard that today’s business world is more comparable to navigating a jungle gym than a ladder–lots of lateral moves or sudden changes and the ability to hop off and then get back on again.  What do you think?  Seems to be pretty spot on to me.

Today, it’s more about fulfillment of a mission, achieving at work and at home, and continuous learning or personal growth.

So, how do you know if it’s a successful day?  Can you even track progress with these more conceptual daily goals?

It’s important to define what success means to you, individually.

We’ll talk about how we define success running two fitness studios and how we keep at it even if things don’t seem to be going the way we want.

Throughout the episode, we referred to The Day Designer, which is the planner we all use.  Check out more about why we’re committed to staying organized and how The Day Designer allows us to make it happen and keep each day on the success track.

The new 2019 planners are available for order and we just got ours!  Since we each have to have a different one, it’s always fun to negotiate who gets which cover (Listen for some funny banter about how we had to make our decisions in the episode.)  But … I think everyone got which one they wanted!

She's On Her Toes 2019 Day Designer

Too funny!  We match!

Emily got Brushstrokes (top left).  Carolyn got Ink Me In (middle).   Christina got Patio Tile (lower right).  We like to order right away, because some patterns sell out!

The Day Designer:

It’s the layout of the planner that is what I like best about it.  Each day gets its own page starting at 5:00 AM and finishing up at 9:00 PM—perfect for me because sometimes I have to teach an early class. The appointments are on the left and the to-do’s are on the right, so your whole day is right there on one page. There is also a spot to prioritize your top three to-do’s which is always helpful when you have lots to accomplish in limited time.

You can check out free downloads of a day’s page hereto test out how the planner might work for you. Another great free download is the Monthly Goal Progress page—I use this to make sure I’m on track with my larger goals and tasks that can’t be completed in just one day.  And, the Food & Exercise Log or Weekly Meal Plan pages are helpful to hold yourself accountable to your workouts and healthy meals. Check out the Day Designer here.

How to Save HOURS on Instagram

We all know that Social Media platforms are a great way to get your business’ message out into the world. I mean, if you really think about it, it’s a f-ing amazing way to get your message out because you’re in complete control of the conversation. Your message won’t get misstated, deleted, or watered down.

If you’re like us, there’s never enough time in the day to post—not to mention the rabbit hole of clicking and liking that can eat away at your valuable time. Sometimes you have the perfect picture, but writer’s block takes over the instant you have time to post. Ugh, the struggle is real.

But … it doesn’t have to be. Today we’re going super-practical and talking about some tools we’ve been using to batch our posts thus saving HOURS on Instagram and Facebook.

Listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify and 7 other platforms.

We talk about creating systems in your business ALL THE TIME, and Social is no different.  Having a system to post saves tons of time and eliminates what can often feel like the Social Time Suck.  Want more information on the apps that we’re using to make our posting easier and effective …

MeetEdgar: We use MeetEdgar to post to the studios’ Facebook pages and you can also post to Twitter and LinkedIn.  We love MeetEdgar because it allows us to create a library of content that is categorized based on type of post … and let’s us post when our audience is most active on our Social platforms.

PLANN: If you thought there was no way to schedule your posts for Instagram, you’re wrong!  Thank goodness!  PLANN allows you to create posts in advance and schedule reminders to post on BOTH your Feed and Stories.  You can make sure your Feed pictures have a pleasing arrangement.  And my favorite thing about this app is if you’re posting to  Stories, the pictures don’t have to be taken within 24 hours.  Oh yeah, and you have access to great information on your Insta analytics, including what posts are most engaging, tracking color palette, and even what hashtags have created the best engagement.

VSCO:  If you’re not using this app to filter your photos, you might want to start.  You can save filters to apply to all your pictures to create a pleasing aesthetic for all your Social posts.

Canva: We use Canva to create professional-looking graphics for our posts.  You can even use Canva to create fliers and it’s all super-easy.

Lightroom: If your studio or business has poor lighting or the lighting changes dramatically throughout the day, this app can really help you filter your Social posts.

These are the apps that we’re using every day to systematize our Social posting thus saving us HOURS on Instagram and Facebook.  Hopefully you can use this information to save time and frustration as well!

What Really Happened In My Business While I Was On Vacation?

If you’ve been following the podcast, you’ll remember in Episode 21: How Will My Team Manage Without Me?, that I recently went on a trip to Australia for almost 3 weeks. We promised a follow-up of what really happened–and there was a lot to talk about, so we recorded the conversation in today’s podcast.

While I was gone, my managers, Emily and Christina, had to manage the studios, create our August sales goals, keep the team motivated, and … hire a new employee. They did all this without me! How did they do it?

Since we already had a hiring process in place (learn more about it here), it wasn’t difficult for them to follow it and find success hiring someone. Creating systems for your business is really important and this scenario clearly demonstrates why.

If you went out of town on an epic vacation and needed to hire someone while you were one, could your team do it? Do you have a hiring process in place?

What’s Your Skincare Routine? We Tell All.

When you’re in a very public profession—teaching class to over one hundred clients each day—you have to have a little confidence.  And it’s much easier to be confident when your skin looks great.

We get asked all the time … What is your skincare routine?  What do you use on your face?  What makeup do you use?  What mascara?

Today we tell all.

But let’s be crystal clear. The reason we all have amazing skin is because we eat really well.  This is a nutrition discussion disguised as a skincare tell-all.  So, if you’re not interested in listening to why eating clean is the way to amazing skin, we’re totally cool with you not listening.  But then you’d miss my recommendation for what is literally the best mascara on the planet.

Check out our favorite products below …

Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash ($28.00):  Emily revealed that she loves this all-natural, spearmint-based facial cleanser and exfoliator–all-natural products are really important to her sensitive skin.  I have to admit, after reading about it, I want to try it too.

Ursa Major Face Wash.jpg

Kopari Deodorant ($14.00): Emily’s must-have product is this natural deodorant.  After trying many, many natural deodorants, she was thrilled to find this one (listen to the podcast to learn why … yikes!).

Kopari Deoderant.jpg

Primally Pure Tea Tree Oil Deodorant ($14.00-$20.00): And recently, I started using Primally Pure natural deodorant.  At the time we recorded, I had just started using it, but I can now report that it’s great–not irritating, and it works!  Even when working out and traveling 20 hours to Australia.  You just need 1 to 2 swipes for all-day protection.  I use Tea Tree Deodorant (Click here for the link), but there are many scents and even an unscented version.  In fact, a brand new scent has just been released called, Blue Tansy (Click here for the link), and Primally Pure has been very generous to offer listeners of the She’s On Her Toes Podcast 10% discount on all Blue Tansy Deodorant sales if purchased by August 31st.  Simply use code WINSTON10 on or before August 31st–the offer will not be available on September 1st.  How amazing is that?!Primally Pure.jpg

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial ($80.00): Emily also recommended this facial for weekly use.  She loves that it has helped improve her sensitive skin.

Drunk Elephant TLC.jpg

And … Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum ($80.00)

Drunk Elephant Serum.jpg

And at night … Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Night Serum ($90.00)

Drunk Elephant Night Serum.jpg

bareMinerals Eye Brightener, Well Rested ($16.99): Christina shared that this is one of her favorite products–a go-to in fact.  She uses it on her eyes and to add subtle highlights to her cheeks and nose.  Love it–a product for the whole face.  She also uses Beautycounter to cleanse her skin as well as makeup for everyday.  Both she and Emily talked about Dew Skin tinted moisturizer and how they both used it regularly when working in the studio.

bareMinerals Eye Brightener.jpg

Eco Lips Scrub ($19.99): Christina’s must-have product is this amazing lip scrub that one of her friends recommended.  Don’t use a lip scrub?  You’re missing out!

Eco Lips.jpg

Fresh Sugar Face Scrub ($62.00): If you’re looking for a stellar face scrub, I love this one from Fresh.  The Rose Face Mask is great too, but I kind of like the sugar crystals and how great they scrub your face to make the skin feel really smooth.

Fresh Sugar Face Polish.jpg

Trish McEvoy ‘Even Skin’ Beta Hydroxy Pads ($65.50):  After washing my face with plain old Neutrogena Ultra-Gentle Daily Cleanser, I use Trish McEvoy Beta Pads to exfoliate, which preps your skin to better absorb any additional treatment or products.  I use these once a day.  When I first started using Beta Pads, I saw smoother and clearer skin after using the whole jar consistently.

Beta Pads

Trish McEvoy ‘Beauty Booster’ Cream SPF 30 ($90.50):  Next, I apply Beauty Booster moisturizer cream with sunscreen.  I have really fair skin and I can get burned easily.  I apply at least twice a day—the formula isn’t greasy, so it’s great to wear under makeup.

Beauty Booster Cream

Trish McEvoy ‘Correct and Brighten’ Professional Strength Multi-Acid Weekly Peel ($125.50):  These are a huge splurge, so I don’t buy them all the time, but if I have a big event coming up where I’ll be in front of a lot of people, I always use one of these a few days before for deeper exfoliating.  I only use at night, which is what is suggested so the product stays on your skin longer.  If you use the Weekly Peel (which doesn’t actually peel your skin) you won’t want to use Beta Pads, because that’s too much exfoliating.  Every time I use one, a few days later, someone compliments how great my skin looks.  This product is pricey, but it works!

Weekly Peel

Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift ($39.00):  Ok.  This stuff is amazing.  If you have dark circles, fine lines, or puffiness this stuff makes the skin around your eyes look lifted and lighter.  A must-have item!

Instant Eye Lift

Trish McEvoy ‘Beauty Booster’ Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 ($76.00):  If you have fair skin like I do, it’s a good idea to layer your sunscreens and this tinted moisturizer is a great compliment to boost the protection of the Beauty Booster cream.  Simply put some on your hand and apply with a makeup brush for coverage that is natural.

Tinted Moisturizer

Trish McEvoy ‘Lash Curling’ Mascara ($31.50)I’ve been wearing Lash Curling Mascara for about 7 years and it’s nothing short of spectacular.  The wand creates a tube around your lash that stays put until you remove it with warm water.  No need for any special eye makeup remover and no stains or mess on your wash cloth.  No matter how hard class is or how sweaty I get, I’ve never had my mascara run or flake off.  Enjoy!

Lash Curling Mascara

There are some things you can save on, but good skincare products and makeup shouldn’t be one of them.  It’s been my experience that the better the product, the better the result.  Since I am in front of hundreds of clients each day at my studios, I always want my skin to look fresh and clear.  If you try anything, I can’t wait to hear how you like it!

How Will My Team Manage Without Me?

When you own a business, it can seem really difficult, if not impossible, to get away and take vacation. The only way you can take that much-needed time off, is to hire a great team to run your business for you.  That’s our message on this podcast.

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

If you don’t hire the right people to work for your business, things will never take off, the business will eventually stop growing, you’ll be miserable and burnt out, and you’re going to miss out on living a great life.

Hiring a team of trusted, capable employees is a big deal.  Not because it’s difficult to find good people, but because it’s the difference between being happy and fulfilled in your business and wanting to give it all up and go back to working in corporate America—not that there’s anything wrong with that.

But as entrepreneurs, working for yourself and being your own boss, should be a source of pride and joy, not anger and bitterness.  Your business should be the gateway to incredible life experiences including, really cool trips.

I haven’t taken much vacation over the last 6 years, since I started my business.  In June, I went to Sedona for 1 week, and that marked the longest I had been away.  At the time of this recording, I’m getting ready to travel to Australia for about 3 weeks. Am I worried about things falling apart in my business while I’m gone?  Nope.

I’ve got 2 incredible managers that will take care of everything for me.  Want to learn how?

What are the 3 New Workplace Truths?

Let’s face it.  Business has evolved A LOT since career women wore suits with shoulder pads, carried bulky briefcases, and sported white sneakers with nylons rushing to the office.

The Internet, smart casual, and side hustles have changed the way we do business.  What is smart casual or snappy casual, anyway?  Talk about confusing.  Glad we just wear leggings to the studio.  But I digress …

In what we’re calling the New Workplace, there are some fundamental truths that apply to all businesses big and small.

  1. Consumers shop where there’s community, rather than cash registers
  2. Traditional marketing is DEAD
  3. Those who influence and manage teams will find workplace success

Today’s conversation will discuss these three things and why businesses that focus on these truths will thrive.

Why I’d Rather Be Brave Than Perfect

I’m really struggling. My life is pretty much weathering one crisis into the next.  There is always a problem in my business.  Always something that needs to be fixed.

Sometimes I let dishes pile up in my sink.

Sometimes I vacuum up enough hair in my house to make another dog.

I wish I could eat salad for lunch, but I just can’t.  I like sandwiches.  With bread.

I will never live up to my inner critic about teaching Pure Barre classes.  And I’m ok with that.

Why?  Because I’d rather be brave than perfect.  I’d rather be doing something rather than nothing because I’m paralyzed with fear.  Moving forward is better than standing still—in business and in life.

Women today seem to value the appearance of perfection above being real.  Making mistakes is taboo.  Admitting that you make mistakes and don’t have all the answers is self-destruction in many social circles.  Other women will look down on you.  You’ll be judged.  Well, f*ck that!

Here’s a newsflash … nobody’s perfect at work, at home or in life.  We’re all dropping the ball and failing at something.  And that’s ok.

When was the last time you heard someone be praised for being brave?  When was the last time you even heard that word in a conversation … I know, I can’t think of a time either.  In today’s podcast episode, we talk about why it’s better to be brave rather than seeking perfection.  When was the last time you were brave?

Podcast Episode 18: What’s it like taking your first Pure Barre class? We share our stories.

Everyone in the Pure Barre world has their “first class” story.  It usually includes the following:

You walked into the studio.

Didn’t know anyone.

Thought class couldn’t be “that” hard.

Was in shell-shock during what the teacher claimed was the “warmup.”

Felt like a complete idiot with arms and legs flailing while everyone else seemed to anticipate the next move.

Finished class, red-faced, wrecked, and hardly able to hobble out to your car.

Meanwhile, everyone else smiled, glistened, and looked fabulous as they effortlessly moved onto the next part of their day.

But … you still came back to your second class because deep down you couldn’t let Pure Barre defeat you. You knew you’d be better at it the next class … and the next class … and the class after that.

She's On Her Toes.jpeg

Today, we tell all about when we took our first Pure Barre classes … and you might be surprised at what we thought.

Podcast Episode 17: Is it possible to find more time each day? Part 2

Last week, we talked about how doing lots of things, doesn’t necessarily mean your business is benefiting.  In fact, you might be doing your business more harm than good by doing everything yourself and not delegating work to others.

This week, we finish the conversation (We talked so much that we split the episode into two parts!) by talking more about how to delegate effectively.  We even share some of our delegating fails, what we learned, and why we’ll never repeat those mistakes again.

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

And finally, we share how we create our ideal day–the ultimate goal of the 5 Days to Time Freedom Course.  What would your ideal day look like?

Podcast Episode 16: Is it possible to find more time each day? Part 1

As business owners, we wear a lot of hats—CEO, Director of Marketing, Scheduler, Head Janitor, Costco Supply Shopper—the list goes on.  But seriously, can someone please let me retire from IT Specialist?!

Do you find yourself exhausted at the end of each day … but haven’t made a dent in your to-do list? Does it seem like you’re working just to pay American Express?  Are you on the verge of massive burnout?  #beenthere

Oftentimes, as busy business owners, we are so focused on the day-to-day and getting our massive to-do lists complete that we fail to recognize if all this work we’re doing is really moving our businesses forward.

What do I mean by that? Well … if you’re doing lots of things, that doesn’t necessarily mean your business is benefiting.  In fact, you might be doing your business more harm than good by doing everything yourself and not delegating work to others.

Yep.  It’s time to take a cold, hard look at how you can find time freedom.  I’ve created a new course called 5 Days to Time Freedom. In as little as 5 days and you’ll determine where your time is being spent and whether it’s time to outsource or hire an employee to help you take your business to the next level.

Check out the course, 5 Days to Time Freedom
