What’s in your gym bag?

In today’s busy world, it’s difficult to distinguish between a woman’s work bag, going out bag, and gym bag. Gym bags are becoming increasingly more functional and chic because frankly, we’re leaving the house and needing them to take us throughout the whole day.  Some gym bags have spots for computers and tablets in addition to wet bags, and water bottle holders.  Today’s active woman needs one bag for everything and we’ll be talking about what we put in our gym bags to take us from dawn until dusk.

How do you know if it’s a successful day?

This is not your father’s success.  In today’s business world, and especially in the business of fitness, success is not defined as climbing a corporate ladder and getting a gold watch at the end of your career.

In fact, I’ve heard that today’s business world is more comparable to navigating a jungle gym than a ladder–lots of lateral moves or sudden changes and the ability to hop off and then get back on again.  What do you think?  Seems to be pretty spot on to me.

Today, it’s more about fulfillment of a mission, achieving at work and at home, and continuous learning or personal growth.

So, how do you know if it’s a successful day?  Can you even track progress with these more conceptual daily goals?

It’s important to define what success means to you, individually.

We’ll talk about how we define success running two fitness studios and how we keep at it even if things don’t seem to be going the way we want.

Throughout the episode, we referred to The Day Designer, which is the planner we all use.  Check out more about why we’re committed to staying organized and how The Day Designer allows us to make it happen and keep each day on the success track.

The new 2019 planners are available for order and we just got ours!  Since we each have to have a different one, it’s always fun to negotiate who gets which cover (Listen for some funny banter about how we had to make our decisions in the episode.)  But … I think everyone got which one they wanted!

She's On Her Toes 2019 Day Designer

Too funny!  We match!

Emily got Brushstrokes (top left).  Carolyn got Ink Me In (middle).   Christina got Patio Tile (lower right).  We like to order right away, because some patterns sell out!

The Day Designer:

It’s the layout of the planner that is what I like best about it.  Each day gets its own page starting at 5:00 AM and finishing up at 9:00 PM—perfect for me because sometimes I have to teach an early class. The appointments are on the left and the to-do’s are on the right, so your whole day is right there on one page. There is also a spot to prioritize your top three to-do’s which is always helpful when you have lots to accomplish in limited time.

You can check out free downloads of a day’s page hereto test out how the planner might work for you. Another great free download is the Monthly Goal Progress page—I use this to make sure I’m on track with my larger goals and tasks that can’t be completed in just one day.  And, the Food & Exercise Log or Weekly Meal Plan pages are helpful to hold yourself accountable to your workouts and healthy meals. Check out the Day Designer here.

What’s Your Skincare Routine? We Tell All.

When you’re in a very public profession—teaching class to over one hundred clients each day—you have to have a little confidence.  And it’s much easier to be confident when your skin looks great.

We get asked all the time … What is your skincare routine?  What do you use on your face?  What makeup do you use?  What mascara?

Today we tell all.

But let’s be crystal clear. The reason we all have amazing skin is because we eat really well.  This is a nutrition discussion disguised as a skincare tell-all.  So, if you’re not interested in listening to why eating clean is the way to amazing skin, we’re totally cool with you not listening.  But then you’d miss my recommendation for what is literally the best mascara on the planet.

Check out our favorite products below …

Ursa Major Fantastic Face Wash ($28.00):  Emily revealed that she loves this all-natural, spearmint-based facial cleanser and exfoliator–all-natural products are really important to her sensitive skin.  I have to admit, after reading about it, I want to try it too.

Ursa Major Face Wash.jpg

Kopari Deodorant ($14.00): Emily’s must-have product is this natural deodorant.  After trying many, many natural deodorants, she was thrilled to find this one (listen to the podcast to learn why … yikes!).

Kopari Deoderant.jpg

Primally Pure Tea Tree Oil Deodorant ($14.00-$20.00): And recently, I started using Primally Pure natural deodorant.  At the time we recorded, I had just started using it, but I can now report that it’s great–not irritating, and it works!  Even when working out and traveling 20 hours to Australia.  You just need 1 to 2 swipes for all-day protection.  I use Tea Tree Deodorant (Click here for the link), but there are many scents and even an unscented version.  In fact, a brand new scent has just been released called, Blue Tansy (Click here for the link), and Primally Pure has been very generous to offer listeners of the She’s On Her Toes Podcast 10% discount on all Blue Tansy Deodorant sales if purchased by August 31st.  Simply use code WINSTON10 on or before August 31st–the offer will not be available on September 1st.  How amazing is that?!Primally Pure.jpg

Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial ($80.00): Emily also recommended this facial for weekly use.  She loves that it has helped improve her sensitive skin.

Drunk Elephant TLC.jpg

And … Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day Serum ($80.00)

Drunk Elephant Serum.jpg

And at night … Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Night Serum ($90.00)

Drunk Elephant Night Serum.jpg

bareMinerals Eye Brightener, Well Rested ($16.99): Christina shared that this is one of her favorite products–a go-to in fact.  She uses it on her eyes and to add subtle highlights to her cheeks and nose.  Love it–a product for the whole face.  She also uses Beautycounter to cleanse her skin as well as makeup for everyday.  Both she and Emily talked about Dew Skin tinted moisturizer and how they both used it regularly when working in the studio.

bareMinerals Eye Brightener.jpg

Eco Lips Scrub ($19.99): Christina’s must-have product is this amazing lip scrub that one of her friends recommended.  Don’t use a lip scrub?  You’re missing out!

Eco Lips.jpg

Fresh Sugar Face Scrub ($62.00): If you’re looking for a stellar face scrub, I love this one from Fresh.  The Rose Face Mask is great too, but I kind of like the sugar crystals and how great they scrub your face to make the skin feel really smooth.

Fresh Sugar Face Polish.jpg

Trish McEvoy ‘Even Skin’ Beta Hydroxy Pads ($65.50):  After washing my face with plain old Neutrogena Ultra-Gentle Daily Cleanser, I use Trish McEvoy Beta Pads to exfoliate, which preps your skin to better absorb any additional treatment or products.  I use these once a day.  When I first started using Beta Pads, I saw smoother and clearer skin after using the whole jar consistently.

Beta Pads

Trish McEvoy ‘Beauty Booster’ Cream SPF 30 ($90.50):  Next, I apply Beauty Booster moisturizer cream with sunscreen.  I have really fair skin and I can get burned easily.  I apply at least twice a day—the formula isn’t greasy, so it’s great to wear under makeup.

Beauty Booster Cream

Trish McEvoy ‘Correct and Brighten’ Professional Strength Multi-Acid Weekly Peel ($125.50):  These are a huge splurge, so I don’t buy them all the time, but if I have a big event coming up where I’ll be in front of a lot of people, I always use one of these a few days before for deeper exfoliating.  I only use at night, which is what is suggested so the product stays on your skin longer.  If you use the Weekly Peel (which doesn’t actually peel your skin) you won’t want to use Beta Pads, because that’s too much exfoliating.  Every time I use one, a few days later, someone compliments how great my skin looks.  This product is pricey, but it works!

Weekly Peel

Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift ($39.00):  Ok.  This stuff is amazing.  If you have dark circles, fine lines, or puffiness this stuff makes the skin around your eyes look lifted and lighter.  A must-have item!

Instant Eye Lift

Trish McEvoy ‘Beauty Booster’ Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 ($76.00):  If you have fair skin like I do, it’s a good idea to layer your sunscreens and this tinted moisturizer is a great compliment to boost the protection of the Beauty Booster cream.  Simply put some on your hand and apply with a makeup brush for coverage that is natural.

Tinted Moisturizer

Trish McEvoy ‘Lash Curling’ Mascara ($31.50)I’ve been wearing Lash Curling Mascara for about 7 years and it’s nothing short of spectacular.  The wand creates a tube around your lash that stays put until you remove it with warm water.  No need for any special eye makeup remover and no stains or mess on your wash cloth.  No matter how hard class is or how sweaty I get, I’ve never had my mascara run or flake off.  Enjoy!

Lash Curling Mascara

There are some things you can save on, but good skincare products and makeup shouldn’t be one of them.  It’s been my experience that the better the product, the better the result.  Since I am in front of hundreds of clients each day at my studios, I always want my skin to look fresh and clear.  If you try anything, I can’t wait to hear how you like it!

Podcast Episode 18: What’s it like taking your first Pure Barre class? We share our stories.

Everyone in the Pure Barre world has their “first class” story.  It usually includes the following:

You walked into the studio.

Didn’t know anyone.

Thought class couldn’t be “that” hard.

Was in shell-shock during what the teacher claimed was the “warmup.”

Felt like a complete idiot with arms and legs flailing while everyone else seemed to anticipate the next move.

Finished class, red-faced, wrecked, and hardly able to hobble out to your car.

Meanwhile, everyone else smiled, glistened, and looked fabulous as they effortlessly moved onto the next part of their day.

But … you still came back to your second class because deep down you couldn’t let Pure Barre defeat you. You knew you’d be better at it the next class … and the next class … and the class after that.

She's On Her Toes.jpeg

Today, we tell all about when we took our first Pure Barre classes … and you might be surprised at what we thought.

Podcast Episode 10: THE Thing Successful People Do

It turns out that what you do every day really does matter.  The most successful individuals on this planet have daily rituals to keep them at the top of their game.  And, overwhelmingly, the most successful and wealthy, read books.  Like, actual books.  Every single day.

She's On Her Toes

Ok, ok.  Some of them listen to books AND podcasts.  But reading the written word directly correlates to higher education and thus higher income.  Studies have shown that reading 7 or more books per year makes you 122% more likely to be a millionaire.  Why is that?

Maybe it’s because reading expands the mind and encourages creativity.  Maybe it’s because so many of us don’t read, that this type of continuous learning gives regular readers a huge advantage in business and in life.

Today, we’ll talk about all that AND share our favorite books and podcasts to help you develop a strong habit of reading.

Listen as we discuss why we all read, why reading is critical to developing a life of learning and curiosity, and our favorite books that had a profound impact on our lives.  We also share what we’re reading and listening to now … and of course some fun, beach reads.

Check out the She’s On Her Toes Podcast on Apple Podcasts and iTunes.  Click here.

As promised, here’s the list of what we’re reading and listening to …

Harry Potter Complete Book Series ($61.14) If you listened to the podcast, you know that these are the books that turned Emily into an avid reader.  And, even though I kind of made fun of her for being obsessed with this series, it makes complete sense that she loves this whimsical, fantastical series because she’s super creative.

Baby-Sitter’s Club Box Set ($29.16) – So … I’m a little older than both Emily and Christina.  I was in college when the first Harry Potter book was published, so I never got into that series.  But … I absolutely loved the Baby-Sitter’s Club when I was in grade school.  I could rip through like five of these books in a day.  This is a series about a group of girls that start their own business baby-sitting … hummm … seems fitting.

The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body ($5.80) – Christina shared that this book, written by Cameron Diaz, was really important to her after college because it helped her embrace healthy habits like working out and eating healthy, and really respecting her body and a balanced life.  It sounded like a great read, so I just ordered it myself.

Other books that have been important to us in life and work …

Never Lose A Customer Again: Turn Any Sale into Lifelong Loyalty in 100 Days ($17.32)

How to Make Friends and Influence People ($9.60)

The Compound Effect ($10.71)

All of Malcolm Gladwell’s books … The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make A Big Difference ($12.67)Outliers: The Story of Success ($12.29) David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants ($10.71) Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking ($8.98)

The Checklist Manifesto ($11.37)

Think And Grow Rich ($7.99)

Think And Grow Rich for Women ($13.60)

The Road Less Stupid ($18.56)

Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself ($7.67)

Girls in the Garden ($9.54)

The Girl Before ($10.04)

Big Little Lies ($13.71)

Podcast: Episode 3, How to Achieve Work/Health Balance

We continue our conversation revealing our tips, tricks, and hacks to get the most out of your time each day.  Time management isn’t a sexy topic, but managing your time effectively can make the difference between living an amazing life and running yourself ragged. In Episode 3 of the podcast, we talk about how we each achieve work/health balance.

She's On Her Toes Podcast Work:Health Balance

Emily, Christina and I talk about how to achieve work/health balance including our favorite ways to eat healthy and save time preparing food.  We’ll also discuss some more controversial time-savers including not getting coffee from Starbucks and not watching TV.  The horror!  But the overall message of this podcast is … spend your time away from work with intent.

One of the unique things about working in the business of fitness, is that you are literally working yourself to exhaustion every day.  So, it’s really important to refuel and refresh in our time away from the studio … and these things can be really time consuming.

But …

We put a lot of time and effort towards our careers and advancement in our jobs.  What if we put the same amount of effort into our health and personal time with friends and family?!   #breakthroughmoment

And to help you use the information shared immediately, we’ve got a great freebie download for you—don’t worry about trying to remember all these hacks and writing them down.  We’ve compiled the complete list that you can download for free by clicking here.

My Favorite Beauty Finds at Whole Foods … And Pics of My Updated Bathroom

I’m not sure what it says about me that in my new house, I’ve managed to only pull together my office (check out that post here) and now my bathroom.  Still living with minimal furniture in all the other rooms! #nojudgement

I’m really excited about how the bathroom has turned out.  I mean, it was pretty spectacular before I moved in.  True story … after I signed the papers and got the keys, I promptly drove myself over to the house with a towel and soap to take a shower.

She's On Her Toes Shower Scents

But after several trips to IKEA to find a desk and shelves for the office, I was ready to stay local for the few things I needed to update the bathroom.

Since the tub is the focal point of the room, I worked to get a few accessories to make it even more special.  Love this column I found at a local antiques store.

She's On Her Toes Plant.JPG

Maybe it’s not a big surprise, but I can’t sit still for very long.  I got this tub caddy with the book/iPad stand so I my tub time lasts longer than an exhale of boredom.

Someone’s posing!

On a trip to Whole Foods, I found a few great beauty finds to maximize my tub experience.

Dr. Bronner’s Shaving Gel, Lavender—The smell!  Sometimes in the winter, my skin gets really dry, so this shaving gel was great to moisturize and condition too.  But, I can’t get enough of the amazingly strong lavender smell.  Would it be wrong to just flip the cap and catch a whiff every now and then?

She's On Her Toes Dr. Bronner's

Nugg Charcoal Skin Detox Face Mask—This mask was great for clearing up some blackheads that were forming on my T-Zone.  Sorry … too gross?  After rinsing, my skin felt smooth and clean.

She's On Her Toes Nugg Face Mask

Everyone Geranium and Sweet Orange Bubble Bath—I only care about two qualities in bubble bath … lots of foamy bubbles and a nice pleasant smell.  This great choice from Everyone checks both of those boxes.

Check out my favorite beauty products from Trader Joe’s here in a previous post.

I’m most excited about this print I found at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art in Winston-Salem.  The artist, Emily Drew Mash (check out her website here), had an exhibition and I just couldn’t get this piece out of my head.  I love that I got to support a local artist, have something I enjoy and is unique.

She's On Her Toes Bathroom

What do you think?  Recovery time from working out and working hard is important.  I’m always happy to come home to this bathroom retreat.  I just have to watch Harper, because she’s always looking to jump in the tub before I can!

Harper literally jumps in and swims!

What You Don’t Do Is Most Important

I am a huge fan of Darren Hardy’s book, The Compound Effect.

The Compound Effect, Darren Hardy:  This book literally changed my life.  My business coach, Mary Ann, gave me a copy to read before one of our first meetings.  Since reading the book, I cancelled my cable, started reading every day, enacted a strict budget both for my personal spending and business spending, and stopped going to Starbucks every day for coffee (I still drink coffee.  And sometimes go to Starbucks.  But I learned how to make a latte at home—that tastes just like Starbucks. Click here to learn how.  It’s really easy and I only had to spend $40 to get the right tools.)  Anyways, back to The Compound Effect…this book is all about making small changes that “compound” to effect bigger more amazing changes.  And it really works.  If you are in the fitness industry you can attest, like I can, that just making one change to work out on a regular basis leads to making other smarter choices about food and drinking.  Then all of a sudden, you’re more toned and people are commenting about how good you look.  Anyways, get this book immediately, if not sooner.  Read it.  Implement just one suggestion—after all it’s called The Compound Effect.  See what happens.

And … I got to hear Darren Hardy speak at the conference I just attended in San Diego.

She's On Her Toes

Here we are!  Learning and freezing–ActionCoach keeps the room like an icebox.

One of the things he said really stuck with me: “The hardest part of your job is what you don’t do.”

Does that make sense?  We literally come face to face with thousands if not tens of thousands of distractions every day.  These distractions compete for our already precious time and prevent us from doing the things that matter most to our success in business and in our homes.

But distractions aren’t just simply the obvious ones like television, the news, and the biggest rabbit hole around, social media.  Distractions could also be opportunities that don’t fit into the scope of your business, or things you do in your business that someone else could be doing.  Click here to read my previous post on what I need to stop doing in my business.

The message was, that in order to be successful, you have to edit your life.  You have to get rid of all the bad stuff—all those bad habits need to be pushed out to get to the good stuff.  So, here’s my Give Up-On List …

Television – This one is holding strong for about a year!  I cancelled my cable in an effort to save money and time (Read about it here).  Because frankly, I was literally wasting so much of it watching stupid sh*t on TV.  And then over the summer, my TV broke, and I haven’t replaced it.  If I want to watch something, I watch Netflix or AmazonPrime on my computer and … it’s a conscious choice!  No more mindless time spent in front of the TV searching for something to watch.  This has given me hours of extra time each day.

News – This one was a little harder, but still holding strong.  I stopped reading the newspaper and watching news on TV, again because it was a huge time suck, but also because constantly reading about and watching negative news was really bringing me down.  And let’s get real, a very small amount of news is actually important for me to know in terms of running my business and living my life.  If there is something that is really important, I find that people will tell me.  And if I have questions about a topic, I’ll go and do my own research—again, a conscious choice to learn more, no mindless time spent sucked into news shows that are completely irrelevant to what I’m trying to accomplish every day.

Starbucks Everyday – Biggest change, biggest impact!  Not only have I saved over $1,500 from not getting Starbucks every day for the last year, I’ve saved about 200 hours of driving and waiting in line to order my coffee.  Y’all, this is huge.  Is there something in your life that you could cut-out or edit that would save you this much time and money?

Yardwork – This is my new challenge.  When I moved into my new house, the yard was much smaller and I thought I could take care of it myself because it wouldn’t take much time.  Wrong. Spending hours or days cutting the grass, trimming plants, weeding, and blowing leaves is not going to contribute to my success as a small business owner.  Yardwork is a never-ending chore that is best left to the professionals.

Being A Non-Leader – Another new challenge.  And by this, I mean, doing things in my business that could be delegated to my employees.  I talked about how I needed to transition away from teaching in a previous post, but there some other things that I could pass on to my team freeing up my time to focus on leading them.

So, choosing not to do something is perhaps more important than choosing to actually do something.  Oftentimes what we edit out of our lives is what allows us to focus on the things that really matter.  What could you edit out of your life or business to free up your time to do more of what matters?  I bet you already know what it is.

Allergic to Banana and Avocado? You Can Eat Smoothies! Here Are My Faves …

Being allergic to banana and avocado doesn’t sound too restrictive until you check out some menus and realize that these elusive fruits can be and sometimes are in just about everything.  Ah!

Just last Fall, I had to save my own life after eating some deviled eggs that were made with avocado oil.  My face turned purple, my throat started to close up, and I was having difficulty breathing.  The whole experience was less than awesome.

But, I’m determined to enjoy many of the same foods my friends eat, including smoothies.  Last year, when I first wrote about these seemingly unbelievable food allergies, I revealed how I started substituting soaked cashews for bananas and avocados in smoothies.  (Click here to read that post.)  Cashews are a great smoothie hack, but could there possibly be any smoothie recipes that simply don’t depend on banana or avocado?  The answer is yes!  Here are my faves …

Mango-Mint Green Smoothie

This is my new go-to.  I like to keep my smoothie thick, so it’s almost like a slushy.  The mint and lime make the taste very refreshing.  You don’t even taste the spinach.  I add some ground flax meal because flax is a super-super food.  Read and learn more here.

1 C. mango (I typically use frozen)

1 C. spinach

1/2 C. fresh mint

1 lime, juiced

1 T. ground flax meal

Coconut water to blend

Put all the ingredients in a high-speed blender—I use Vitamix.  Blend on medium-high speed until all the ingredients are combined.  You can gradually add the coconut water to help the ingredients mix and get the desired thickness of your smoothie.  Enjoy the green goodness!

She's On Her Toes Green Smoothie

Cacao-Cherry Smoothie

This is a great recipe from my manager, Emily.  If anyone knows a good smoothie recipe, it’s Emily!  I love that this one is sweet and adding the cacao nibs is a great combination with the cherries.  Emily used apple juice in her original recipe.  I don’t really like apple juice, so I’ll stick with coconut water.  I also added a few dates because I had some left over from another recipe.

1 C. frozen cherries

1 C. kale

1 T. chia seeds

1 T. ground flax meal

1 T. cacao nibs

Coconut water or apple juice to blend

Put all the ingredients in a high-speed blender—I use Vitamix.  Blend on medium-high speed until all the ingredients are combined.  You can gradually add the coconut water or apple juice to help the ingredients mix and get the desired thickness of your smoothie. Choco-cherry!  Nom, nom, nom.

I hope you try out these great banana and avocado-free smoothies.  Let me know what you think!

My New Beauty Source: Trader Joe’s

It all started one day when I was in a hurry.  I needed to do my grocery shopping and buy some lotion … and I didn’t have time to go to both the grocery store and Target (which is on the other side of town).  So, I wandered down the beauty and home aisle of Trader Joe’s hoping to find something that would soothe my dry skin for at least a few days before I could get my usual brand.  And I came across Trader Joe’s A Midsummer Night’s Cream and Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream.

A Midsummer Night’s Cream

Ultra Moisturizing Hand Cream

And … I haven’t gone back to the brand I was using before.

It made me wonder what other great bath and beauty products I was missing out on at Trader Joe’s.  Next, I tried the brand-new Grapefruit Ginger Sugar Scrub, which is amazing!  It smells fresh and makes your skin feel great when you scrub.

She's On Her Toes Trader Joe's Shower Scrub

Dr. Bronner’s 18-in-1 Hemp Peppermint Pure-Castile Soap

I’ve used Dr. Bronner’s soaps before, and thought I’d try the peppermint one.  Invigorating!  And good suds at a great price—that huge bottle was about $12.00.

I was on a roll!  So, my next purchase was the Next to Godliness Micellar Cleanser & Makeup Remover Towelettes and Natural Facial Cleansing Pads with Tea Tree Oil.

She's On Her Toes Trader Joe's Face

Next to Godliness Micellar Cleanser & Makeup Remover Towelettes

Natural Facial Cleansing Pads with Tea Tree Oil

I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on this!  The makeup remover towelettes are amazing—they are great for my drier winter skin, work better than the brand I was using before, smell amazing, and my skin feels clean after I use them, not slimy.  I was a little worried about trying out the cleansing pads with tea tree oil since my skin is also pretty sensitive.  But … my fears were completely unfounded.  In fact, I’ve noticed that the pores on my cheeks and nose are smaller and clearer.  #winning

Finally, try this fancy trick … hang some eucalyptus branches in your shower for a fresh scent in the steam.  Since one bunch is about $3.00 at Trader Joe’s, it’s an inexpensive way to make your average shower feel spa-quality.

She's On Her Toes Shower Scents

I no longer skip the home and beauty aisle at Trader Joe’s.  If you give any of these products a try, let me know how you like them.
